Biography

James M. Martin has a distinctive record of delivering growth by building and leading high performing and healthy sales teams. He is a strategic leader with demonstrated expertise regarding what it takes for leaders to thrive in their role and in the marketplace.

Education

In 1985, Jim earned a B.S. in Business Administration from St. Joseph’s University’s Haub School of Business, where he majored in Management Information Systems with a focus in Philosophy.

In 2000, Jim earned his M.B.A from Temple University’s Fox School of Business, with a degree in Marketing.

Early Career

Between 1985 and 1988, Jim worked for the United States Navy Aviation Supply Office, where he managed parts procurement and logistics for Navy fighter aircraft as an Inventory Management Specialist.

Between 1988 and 1995, Jim held various sales and territory management positions with Leica Geosystems, Donaldson Company, and Mack Trucks, Inc.  In these roles he sold technology and industrial products to customers in engineering, transportation, and construction environments.

Keurig Green Mountain (Formerly Green Mountain Coffee Roasters)

Between 1995 and 2001, Jim held the role of Area Sales Manager for Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and was subsequently named the company’s first Regional Sales Manager in 1998, with sales management responsibility for the Mid-Atlantic regional sales team.

In 2001, Jim was promoted to lead the company’s direct foodservice business, first as National Sales Manager, Wholesale Division, then in 2002 as Vice President, National Sales Team.  In his first 18 months, Jim and his sales team transformed this business, turning a double-digit declining business into a consistent double-digit growth business.  During Jim’s leadership tenure, this business grew from $35M to $50M.

In 2006, Jim was named Vice President, Away from Home West Zone Sales, and relocated from Pennsylvania to Colorado.  He formed a new team in sales of beverages to distributor and end user partners across a 35-state zone.  Jim and his team grew this business from $20M to $45M in two years.

In 2008, as a result of this rapid growth, the West Zone was subdivided to create a new South Zone.  Jim continued his leadership of the remaining 25 state West Zone until 2012.  During that time Jim and his team grew sales from a $15M base to $65M in annual sales revenues.

In 2012, Jim was named Vice President Sales, Foodservice Channel.  In this role, he led a national sales team of Account Managers, and Strategic Account Managers and Directors, in sales of brewer and beverage products to distributors, operators, and national accounts.  This newly formed $72M sales channel grew to $92M in two years under Jim’s leadership.

In 2014, Jim voluntarily left Keurig Green Mountain to pursue personal and professional projects.

In 2017, Jim published his book: “The Modern Compassionate Leader – 12 Essential Characteristics of the Rising Sales Leader.” Jim outlines the critical hard and soft skills that leaders must master to build and guide healthy teams that win in the marketplace, while maintaining their own career momentum. Jim’s highly rated book teaches his leadership principles through a series of stories, lessons, and guidance in a practical and readable format.

In 2020, Jim published an e-book: “Working from Home – A Quick Start Guide.” Jim outlines the basics of working remotely from a home office, guiding workers who are working offsite for the first time to become productive and effective in their new circumstance.

Jim also writes about insights in business and leadership in his blog: “Compassionate Leadership” at www.jamesmichaelmartin.com, and speaks about these lessons on “Jim Martin’s Compassionate Leadership Podcast.” Jim focuses on guidance for the rising leader in the areas of career development, productivity, selling, and personal empowerment.

Throughout his career, Jim has demonstrated an ability to form and develop high performing sales teams, turn-around declining business units, and build newly formed emerging business segments into growing and profitable business segments.  Jim’s collaborative leadership style, business acumen, and ability to establish positive relationships with others, are the keys to his success.  Aligning teams behind clear strategy and producing measurable success are Jim’s core passions.
